One rainy weekday, my sister and I decided to stop by Icings and have some soup to warm our stomachs. Icings is one of the restaurants located at SM Supercenter Pasig (beside Tiendesitas). Although it's neatly tucked in the corner of Hypermart and although its interiors seem unassuming, don't be quick to judge the place and doubt the exquisiteness of their meals. With its name and its prominent displays, Icings really is primarily a cake/bread shop but people have also discovered the wonder that is their soup.
Whenever we go here, we usually order soup, pasta and cake from Icings. But since we still had to have dinner at home, my sister and I opted to just get some mushroom soup.
The first time we tried their mushroom soup, oh my gosh, we instantly exclaimed "Ang saraaap!" Their version of mushroom soup is creamy and thick because it has mushroom bits and cheese in it. I'm not sure (because I'm no food expert ) but I think it has mozzarella cheese in it. Its taste and texture is just superb. Ack, just looking at the picture makes me want to have some more soup again.
This delectable soup influenced me to search for some cream of mushroom with cheese recipes. I did find some recipes but I still have to try if the ones I got online taste anything like it. So I guess I'll be going back to Icings until then.

Restaurant Review: The Tasting Room SOCO Private Dining
There's an ongoing rise in the number of Private Dining Places in the Metro nowadays. Last weekend, I went with my family to "The Tasting Room" SOCO Private Dining in San Antonio Village. The Tasting Room is a by reservations only restaurant owned by Mr. Dennis Gan. The way private dining places work is either they let you tell them what you want them to cook for you or, like The Tasting Room's, they offer set menus.
When I called their office two weeks before our planned dinner date, I got so dissatisfied with their system. It seemed like their receptionist kept on forgetting to write down my reservation (they actually asked me about the details of my reservation three separate times). Also, when I asked for the directions to the place, the same receptionist said she'd email me the sketch. I also had to remind her several times to email me the sketch but that never materialized. They did, however, text me how to go there from a certain area after I texted them for directions (I gave up on asking for the sketch). Lucky I didn't let that stop me from confirming our reservation because from what I've heard, SOCO is one of the best private dining restaurants in the area.
When we arrived at SOCO, all my dissatisfaction vanished. The place is an old residential home converted into a tasting room. Upon entering the gate, you'll be greeted by a candle-lit cocktail area. For me it was already a pretty sight but I wasn't aware that I needed to prepare myself for something more captivating. Behind the sliding door, a table for six was in the middle of the room patiently waiting for our arrival. It just instantly felt so special, so enchanting. Now I understand why romantic movies usually feature empty restaurants reserved for the guy who's about to propose to the girl he loves.
As we got comfortable in our seats, our server introduced herself and offered us some drinks. Then our journey of the 6-course meal began. The Tasting Menu Number 1 started with some Baked Brie Phyllo with Raspberries as appetizer. Followed by the Tuscan Mushroom Salad.
The third and fourth course were Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Goat Cheese Whipped Cream and Tiger Prawns on a pool of Squid ink sauce topped with Chorizo Fritto and Paella-flavored Risotto, respectively.
My sisters and I love pumpkin soup. Whenever we go to Italian restaurants or fine dining restaurants, we order pumpkin soup as if we're on the search for the best pumpkin soup in town. Frankly, I was excited to try SOCO's pumpkin soup but it didn't meet my expectations. This is my least favorite dish among the 6. I even whispered to my sister that I want to ask for freshly ground pepper for the soup (because it was too bland for my taste) but of course, I didn't. The Tiger prawns course is an entirely different story. By this time, I already felt full but because the entire dish was so cohesive, I couldn't stop from stuffing myself. I tried my best to finish the 2 pieces of prawns (and I did!) but didn't finish the risotto anymore. I wanted to finish it because it was really good but as is the case with me and risotto dishes, I easily get full after a few bites.
The Wagyu flat-iron steak is my second least favorite from the six courses. Although the beef wasn't tough, I just didn't understand what flavors the chef wanted us to taste. I'm a fan of meat but I ended up eating the pureed potatoes more than the meat itself. Fortunately, the meal ended with a great note through the last course, dessert! The dessert was a Chocolate souffle with White Chocolate shavings served with Vanilla Bean sauce. The chocolate souffle was heavenly. It felt like it was melting in my mouth. I honestly didn't see the white chocolate shavings but I don't mind because I enjoyed it to the last morsel. To think that we were already full from the five other courses, all of us were still able to finish off the dessert. Yup, it's that GOOD!
I asked Joan, our server, about the minimum and maximum number of people they accept. She said they accept reservations for 2 as long as the food you'd order would reach the amount they require (Php 8,000) before they accept your reservation. The most number of people they've accepted is 25. So if you have a big group of friends or if you want your family to have a different kind of dinner, The Tasting Room is an excellent intimate set-up.
They also offer other Tasting Menus aside from the one we availed and those are:
Tasting Menu 3 (Php 1,000.00 per person)

| Despite disliking fruits, I enjoyed the appetizer with raspberries. The salad was interesting but a bit too bitter. |
If there's one word to describe the Baked Brie Phyllo it would be YUMMYYYYY. Even though we gobbled it within seconds (yes, it was THAT good!), it helped to set the mood for the entire experience. The Tuscan salad had interesting textures and there are a lot of things I liked about this salad. I loved the Raclette cheese, Tuscan mushrooms, the pan-seared foie gras in carpaccio and the creamy sauce. But, sadly, the bitter vegetables ruined it for me. It was a different story for my sister and mom, though. Their portions of salad didn't have any (my sister's had a few pieces of) bitter veggies. Maybe the chef forgot to toss it before plating?

Restaurant Review: Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt
Last week, a friend of ours introduced me and 2 other friends to a yoghurt store in Glorietta. Tutti Frutti is unlike your regular yogurt place wherein you place your order and wait by the cashier. Here you:
![]() |
| Get your own yogurt cup |
![]() |
| Fill it with your chosen flavor |
![]() |
| Choose your toppings |
So what did my friends and I get?
One of our friends appreciated the flavors offered by Tutti Frutti because she can't seem to like the taste of regular yoghurt (a bit sour). So, I feel that that is a plus for this yoghurt place...more people get to appreciate it! Also, another friend pointed out that their flat rate of 20PHP per ounce is good because you can control how much you get. So this is good for those on a diet and for those who are just craving for the taste of yoghurt. If you wanna try their yoghurt, visit them at Glorietta 4, 3rd floor (near Italliani's and infront of Bizu).
How about you, what flavor and toppings have you tried in Tutti Frutti?

Restaurant Review: Cafe Breton
There are days when my taste buds crave for something so totally out of the blue that I end up having one of those "spontaneous-slash-weird" food trips.
This time, I found myself wanting to eat crepes at lunch time.
My incessant prodding got me what I wanted and although the thought of eating crepes for lunch didn't go well with my mom, we still ended up at Cafe Breton-- one of the best places to go to for crepes in the metro!
Cafe Breton as most may know is well known for their French crepes but don't think that's all they offer. They have other options too (that are more 'lunch' appropriate) but really, since you're in a place known for crepes, then you SHOULD eat crepes!
For my "main" meal, I got a savory crepe filled with garlic, tomatoes and cheese:
I am super glad my taste buds were acting weird that day because I couldn't be more satisfied with my lunch! Cafe Breton does live up to its reputation of having really good crepes. I tell you, if you haven't been there, you should schedule breakfast/lunch/dinner there some time soon! It's that good!
PK rating: 9/10!

| Vampire Crepe (tomatoes, cheese and garlic) Sooo good! Notice how it's nice and brown on the outside. It may look "glossy" but believe me, it's not oily--at all! |
| Yum yum yum yum! Just looking at it now makes me hungry! |

Revisting Jack's Loft
It's been a while since I last ate at Jack's Loft that revisiting it feels like walking down memory lane.
Let's start with the stuff I usually get:
Here's their trademark Fish bowl iced tea which I absolutely love! I think they use raspberry tea co'z it tastes like it. Plus! It's so big! Some get this for sharing but honestly, I can finish one bowl by myself. lol!
Next is "I Declair", a HUGE eclair with vanilla ice cream filling and choco-caramel syrup on top. The whole eclair is covered with cream which makes for a super sinful dessert!
To be honest, I don't love LOVE this but since I'm used to getting this everytime I drop by Jack's loft, I got it for old time's sake. Don't get me wrong, it IS good but maybe TOO good. Blah! don't mind me, just try it for yourself, k?
Here's the cheesecake that *supposedly made them famous. It's uh... cheesecake-y. Lol! I think I'm biased on this one because I'm a die hard Secret Recipes girl so to me, no other cheesecake compares.
And voila! Here's my ultimate favorite! Vegetarian lasagna! Heaven!!! Promise, it is sooooo good even non-vegetarians would love it!
Here are Jack's fries. Nothing special, except instead of catsup, they give gravy instead.
...uhm? Something something with grilled chicken. Super tasty too! It has mushrooms and sour cream which makes for a very, very savory dish!
Baked Potato soup... one word: yum!
Oooh la la! Another of my favorites!!! Seriously, it's the first time I enjoyed eating garlic mushrooms. I don't usually enjoy ordering this because there's never any variation to the taste. It's too simple! But this one from Jack's loft is soooooo good! You HAVE to taste it!
I'm really glad we decided to drop by Jack's Loft. I realized I missed the food and it reminded me why I enjoyed eating there as a student. The food is love! It also helps that I'm always in good company which makes for the perfect dining experience :)

Real life "secret garden"
Part of the reason I think I got sick is because we went to Batangas last weekend. It was really fun especially since the province has beautiful treasures waiting to be discovered. One of the most memorable places for me was this quaint restaurant called Kainan sa Dalampasigan in Nasugbu, Batangas.
When I first heard we were going there I thought, "Oh no, another seafood resto. What do I eat??" But to my surprise, the restaurant wasn't "seafood-themed" at all!

I was pleasantly surprised to find a place completely covered by vines and pretty plants. The place looks so rustic that I was immediately drawn to it!
The interior of the restaurant likewise reflected a "home-y" feel. It was Spanish inspired with its cathedral windows, exposed beams and wooden chairs and tables. It was so pretty!
The best thing I like about it is it wasn't formal at all! It felt like visiting a home. The beautiful plants inside the resto also added to the laid back feel. Can you believe there's even a waterfall inside??
The interior is really pretty! I absolutely love how the whole place looks and feels like one big garden! ...and to think I haven't even shown you the garden itself! Ch-ch-check it out!
I am in love with these ceiling high wooden doors! They look so shabby chic!
And speaking of doors, here's the entrance to "lolo's garden":

I super love how you feel so close to nature. Every nook and cranny is filled with plants! It's a restaurant IN a garden not a garden in a restaurant. The place is so magical, I am half-expecting to bump into tinkerbell. lol!
So sorry didn't get to take pictures of the food. In a phrase, "it's unremarkable". It's just okay :P
No reservation is needed so if you happen to pass by Nasugbu, Batangas drop by this place! It's an experience you would want to have in your lifetime. Trust me on this :)

Delifrance Couture Tray
My fondest memory of Delifrance dates back to when I was still 6 years old and my mom would leave me there while she goes to the supermarket. I didn't realize I was alone then because I was in tart heaven! Their kiwi tart is soooo good! (take that from a six-year old. It's that good!)
Well, things changed, I grew up; mom doesn't leave me when she goes grocery shopping anymore; I was introduced to starbucks; yada yada yada. Basically, it only meant one thing: fewer visits to Delifrance.
I haven't been in Delifrance for a year already so when I found myself at Delifrance MOA (I say this is the prettiest outlet! so chic!), I was pleasantly surprised to find new additions to their menu.
Introducing... Delifrance' couture tray!

Why couture? I don't know. Hahaha! I think it's because it looks so chic and the portions were for the "fashionable" crowd if you know what I mean (it was small okay? lol!)
There's a sandwich, a litte bit of pasta (for just about three big forkfuls)

...then there's mushroom soup and three bread sticks on the side. I say the presentation is so cute, I didn't even mind if in actuality, the soup is only about two spoonfuls and that the bread sticks were a tad bigger than a popsicle stick.

...and finally, here's dessert!
Don't be fooled darlings, it's just as small as my thumb! Hehehe :P
I don't really know what to make of the couture tray. I have nothing against the taste and the portions were somewhat enough especially since there were a lot on the tray itself. It's actually a complete meal! ...and oh yeah, it comes with a free drink too!
Seriously, how do I rate this? Err, I think I have to leave this unrated. For presentation though, it's a perfect ten! So chic! :) But I certainly don't recommend this for hungry people. I tell you, it lives up to its name! It's for models... fashion savvy girls... and then some.

Yoghurt love ♥
I am a big yoghurt fan. I grew up on yoghurt and yoghurt drinks that we hardly run out of yakult, chamito or nestle yoghurt in our fridge. Not only does it do wonders for my digestive system, I also really like the sweet and sour taste of yoghurt.
Well, after a long and tiring day at an event in Tarlac, me and friends decided to binge eat at White Hat-- and binge eat I did! Yum-o!

White Hat offers yummy frozen yoghurt. You can add toppings from fruits, cereals, nuts, chocolates, or whatever your heart desires! (and also whatever is available. lol!)
I love it so much it's like eating a sour sundae which to me tastes heavenly!
Here are the ones we ordered:

Here are the ones we ordered:

"Fun" hat: oreo, marshmallows and almond strussel

A chocoholic's take: choco puffs, chocolate chips and brownies

Baker's Hat! My favoriteeeee! Blueberries, cheesecake bits, and almond strussel

Strawberry Cheesecake version: strawberry jam, cheesecake bits, almonds
Yummy! My friends didn't get to finish theirs and I ended up wiping their cups clean! Lol! :P I guess you can say loving the taste of yoghurt is acquired. It's not for all but as the adjective implies, it's "acquired", it just takes getting used to and I'm sure you'll love it too! (Just think of it like coffeee when we were young, we hated it but now we're avid fans! same goes for tea too!)
How about you girls? Do you like the taste of yoghurt? What's your favorite frozen yoghurt store?

PK correspondent Trixie, signing in!
Hello PK readers! It's really a great pleasure to be PK's blogger correspondent, and I hope I'd do more entries here. *wink wink, hint hint*
A small introduction about me: I'm Trixie Cabilan, a struggling (harhar) college senior taking up Philippine Arts. No, don't call me 'Ate'; it's fine. The girls and I were schoolmates and orgmates in college and like them, I've been a blogger for quite some time already. I've maintained a couple of blogs but right now, I'm into photo and micro-blogging. :)
On with the entry, which was actually overdue. Haha...
=====
I was ecstatic when PK sent me an invitation from Bo's Coffee. Because I was already on sem break, I agreed to grace the invitation and instantly thought of bringing my sister along since we haven't bonded that much since school started this year (and because she's on sem break too). I'm not much of a coffee drinker (the only delicious coffee I know is the instant coffee mix) and never really hung out in coffee shops (because I'm kuripot like that), but we both love to eat and take photos of what we eat. Haha!
On a personal note, I'm happy that another local coffee company has entered the mainstream coffee industry. The shop name might not ring a bell, but Bo's Coffee has already gained a loyal following and is not really that new in the Philippine coffee scene. Named after the owner's Italian friend, Bo's started their very first business venture in Cebu 13 years ago. From then on, the company has grown and established 40 branches all over the country--majority of which are stationed in NCR.
Dearest sister, plus her friend, and I went to the newly-opened 40th branch of Bo's Coffee in Glorietta 5. It definitely looks like any other coffee shop from the outside but after what happened that day, I became a convert. This article is longer than you'd normally read from PK, so I suggest you prepare yourself for picspams and lots of kwento.

(Can you see that wall décor of triangles/diamonds on the bottom left photo? They're actually made from coffee beans!)
First, the interiors. Definitely very cozy (loooove the curtain—very very homey), but they could put in some more couches or seats though. The shop has free wi-fi, and everything inside are locally-made: the couches are shipped from Cebu; wall décors are handmade by Cebuano artists; wall photos are taken by the owner himself. I was blown away when the marketing manager told us that the ambient lights are designed by THE Kenneth Cobunpue, world-renowned furniture and interior designer. As an art student, I was grateful that this company actually supports local artists.
Okay dearies, on with the food adventure. To start, they served us this veryyyyy sinful (there-goes-my-diet) dessert sampler. And because it's a sampler, the size of each food is reduced (Haha whatever that means).
FROM L TO R:
THE COOKIES
* Oatmeal cookies (40php per piece): Think Quaker Oats oatmeal cookies, except that Bo's version is larger and a lot more chewy: actual size is 5-7 times larger than the size in this photo/sampler. :)
* Choco Chunk and Fudgynut cookies (35php per piece): They taste great, really chewy, and not overpoweringly sweet (compared to others), which earns them two thumbs up from us.
TRUFFLE CAKE (100php per slice): Personal favorite! Just seeing my spoon sinking into this is pure bliss. Haha. The taste: very sweet, chocolatey, and it literally melted in my mouth. Bo's Truffle Cake is the epitome of decadence. Not recommended for the weight-conscious peeps though. :-P Just kidding. A bit pricey, but worth every centavo and calorie.
REVEL BAR (55php per piece): Typical looking brownie, but a lot more chewy and tastier than the others.
CARROT BAR (60php per piece): My sister's friend was very partial to this one because he loves carrots. I never got to try this one, but my sister and her friend said that it was really really good.
MALLOW FUDGE (50php per piece): This was the first thing I tried from the sampler. I absolutely love the mallows on top, and I know you will too when you've tried this. The brownie itself is not too sweet, for I hate oversweetened brownies (like those bought in bakeshops). And as I type this in, I'm suddenly craving for one. Woo!
Bo's Coffee is also finding ways to cater to the weight- and/or health-conscious customers, thus they came up with a line of sugar-free drinks. Heaven knows how I love strawberries, so you'd probably imagine my excitement when they handed these Strawberry Sugar-Free blends samplers to us. It literally tasted like melted ice cream, minus the guilt.
Next: pasta dishes. The G5 branch serves 4 pasta dishes ("made from the freshest ingredients and not from the pack/can", they assured us), and we got to try 3 of them. Sana they'd have Pesto as well. ;)
My sister got Pasta Carrietere, which consists of chicken and tomato. Mine's Pasta Bolognese, and my sister's friend had Carbonara, which is the only non-tomato based pasta. The other one's Pasta Pomodoro, which costs the same as the Bolognese. If you're a fan of Italian-style pasta like myself, you will definitely enjoy their dishes. The Carbonara, on the other hand, didn't fail us as well because it is not as nakakaumay and "milky" as you'd imagine it. Serving size-wise, it's not bitin; in fact, nabusog ako kaagad.
If you're not a fan of desserts or pasta and you'd opt for a healthier meal, their sandwiches are a must-try. They serve 3 kinds that can be light lunches, because each sandwich serving is pretty hefty.
Of course, Bo's Coffee would not be a coffee shop without the brewed and blended coffees. To cap off everything, I tried the Caramel Blended Drink which is really tasty and not nakakaumay yung tamis unlike other caramel-based drinks. I was also surprised with the amount of whipped cream present in their blended drinks, and this looks like good news for the health-conscious folks. I think this is also good because it doesn't mask the "real" flavor of the drink.
Bo's Coffee also serves tea, and they have a wide variety of choices—from the regular English and green teas, to ginger tea and some weird-sounding names like Gunpowder Tea (Before you freak out, I assure you that it's not made from real gunpowder). My sister's friend chose Orange Tea; he even managed to have 3 rounds of the same drink because he liked the taste very much.
We were also very fortunate to take home and be one of the firsts to own the Bo's Coffee tumblers and nifty bottled waters.
Just kidding. :-P
They have lots in store for the customers this year as they're going to launch their tumblers and other coffee products. If you're curious, visit a branch near you. ;-)
We have yet to try other coffee shops (Harhar. I forgot how Starbucks food tastes like. It's been years kasi. Okay, kill me now), but so far Bo's Coffee haven't failed us in terms of food, place, and price.
I don't know about you, but with the ambience, food, and a very friendly crew, my sister and I are definitely going back for more.
** So that has been PK correspondent Trixie! Thank you Trix! Hope you enjoyed your stint as a certified PK girl! Much love from us! **

(Bottled water on your left; tumbler on the right. They look cool, don't they?)
We were also very fortunate to take home and be one of the firsts to own the Bo's Coffee tumblers and nifty bottled waters.
(The look on my face is epic!)

Restaurant Review: Maru
My mom and ninang are the biggest Koreanovela fans. Can you believe my ninang even has Bae yong jung's (from Winter Sonata) manager's number?-- and on top of that, she even contacted KBS and MBC on her trip to Korea just to get Jang Dong Gun's (Kenneth of All About Eve) number? lol!
Well, that addiction got them patrionizing a lot of Korean stuff-- especially their food. That means only one thing: eating sessions at Korean restaurants. lol!
Honestly, I don't think Korean Food is vegetarian-friendly so I'm not that excited to eat at Korean restos. Oftentimes, I have to "edit" out the meat from my meal which is something I try to avoid doing when we eat out. But then, what's one more "un-vegetarian-friendly" restaurant to add to the roster? So our stop? Maru.
Choosing what to eat was a task for me because there weren't a lot of vegetarian friendly stuff in their menu. But our server was very helpful in suggesting items that I could eat and he assured me that there are plenty of vegetables in Korean cuisine that could fill me.
I picked the Bibimbap co'z I was seriously craving for rice:
See how it's full of veggies?? I laveeet! :P I also think it's delightful that it was in a hot stone bowl. It kept the food warm--no, make that HOT even after a long while. The best thing about this type of Bibimbap is the fact that the meat part is so small and clumped together which makes it so easy to remove :)
Here's Maru's take on the traditional on-the-spot grilled meat:

Wrapping everything in lettuce was the fun part! Didn't matter if mine didn't have meat, it was really flavorful already! Yum, yum!
I really enjoyed eating at Maru that I even brought my good friend P, who doesn't like Korean food there only to turn her into a convert! We love, love Maru!
Overall taste: Great with a capital G! Everything tasted authentic especially their Kimchi. A tip: you should ask for a little bit of sesame oil with salt and some soy bean paste, they are sooooo yummy and goes well with everything!
Ambience: The place was really nice and well- lighted. It also gives you options on where to sit (either on the floor in true Korean style, or on basic tables and chairs).
Value for Money: Excellent! For the pictures on this post, not including the grilled mackerel I forgot to add, everything cost us less than P1,000! That's three dishes total, and we didn't even get to finish them all!
PK advise: The servers are really nice that it's sad that they don't charge for service. I think it would be proper to leave them a good tip! Also, it's best to eat here if you're not going anywhere else after co'z they don't use smokeless grills and I tell you, the smoky smell has a way of sticking to your clothes!
So if you want to try authentic Korean cuisine without breaking the bank, check out Maru at HK Sun Plaza, Diosdado Macapagal Blvd, Pasay :)
