Turning the basic into art

When I was a kid, I didn’t really like to read newspapers mainly because I didn’t understand all the serious stuff yet. I did, however, like to pretend like I was a grownup so what I’d do was get the paper, find the illustrations and act as if I was intently reading the articles. That’s how I got to know about the famous Slice of Life portion in the Weekend Magazine of one of the prominent broadsheets. Larry Alcala, a graduate of UP Fine Arts, was well-recognized locally and internationally for his contribution to the cartoon industry.

We recently got news that SOLO created a memorabilia collection of the Pinoy Cartoonist’s works. I can't wait to visit one of their stores because of the following items I saw in their site:
I'd love to wear this BUTTON DOWN BUBBLE DRESS (Php1,795) with black sheer stockings and my metallic pink flats

Wear this GRAY/TEAL SLUB DRESS (Php1,595) layered or on its own.

Can you rock this funky pair of PRINTED LEGGINGS (Php795)?I wonder if I can..
A SLEEVELESS COLLARED BLOUSE WITH A FRONT POCKET (Php1,595) in red brings a wonderful pop of color to my wardrobe.
I'd love to have this: LIMITED EDITION UNISEX WATCH (Php1.195). Who knows, we might be able to give one away to a lucky reader!

They also have a collection for men. I looked at it and saw numerous His&Hers shirts for the collection. What caught my attention though, was this:
DOGTAG WITH LOCK/HEART PENDANT (Php495) in Black
If the photos above aren't enough to get you giddy then maybe this next bit of information would...SOLO officially launched their Online Model Search (feat: Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia) 2 days ago! If you wanna be a model just like the new Miss Universe, Jimena Navarrete (yup, she has been modeling since 15), why don’t you try and check the mechanics at SOLO'S ONLINE MODEL SEARCH PAGE. You can also follow them, if you please, on Facebook or Twitter. Or check their other Larry Alcala designs by going to their website.

Hope to see you in one of the SOLO branches and hope to see your entries in their online model search page!

P.S.
Congrats to Ms. Philippines’ Venus Raj for making it to the Top 5. Also, Kudos to Mexico’s Jimena Navarrete for besting 82 equally gorgeous participants in the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant!

Starbucks Planner 2010

It's kinda crazy because I don't use planners all that much anymore but I still tried my best to get an SB planner. I guess I only collected the stickers and tried to get a free planner from Starbucks because it has become a tradition for me. Last year when I initially saw the 2009 planner, I felt a bit disappointed with it because `09 planner and I, we weren't made for each other. Although I loved 09's appearance, our hearts and minds didn't click. He had style but he had no substance! But oddly enough, I say the opposite to the 2010 Starbucks planner.

Alright, at first it was also a bit hard to accept that he's no longer my fine choco-err..-coffee man, he's now black and white! okay, maybe he's SB's tribute to MJ but..*sigh* At least with oh-nine, we were given options regarding color - black, blue and red.

This year, it's the same monochromatic scheme. The only thing that differs is..come on, look harder...the images used for the cover. Also, I'm kinda doubting he'd remain b n' w for a long time..especially since the usual collectors of these planners are coffee enthusiasts... who love to drink their coffee ALL THE TIME...who'd probably spill some of their beloved coffee one time or the other on their precious planners. Yikes for the 2010's new texture. tsktsk.

One of the three available designs

What I love about 10 though, is SUBSTANCE. I love how no fuzz his layout is. I love that they didn't opt to allot lots of pages for silly stuff after the month's border..

2010 starts with Dec.2009 and ends with Jan 2011

I love how 10 allows me to doodle on him wherever I want to. I'm not constricted with boxes for "Most Important Tasks" or "Accomplish this"..10 just shows how much he is for my expression of my creative side! He'd rather see me use big red permanent markers for my most important task for the day and use sequins to do a border.

Also, he's so thoughtful that he secretly left me a stash of coupons I could claim from any Starbucks branch for certain periods within 2010. Lastly, he made an effort and assured that I wouldn't have a hard time looking for the page I'm in by attaching a page marker with a faux coffee bean attached to it. *swoon*

Beancurd (Bean and freebee card)

Well, are you hooked or what? Ain't he the sweetest? :p

Are you ready for your 2010 plans?

So, have you already chosen which famous planner you'd like to get for yourself, your friends, and loved one/s this Christmas? Well, here's a quick glimpse of the following planners we'll do 'reviews' on.

A little discussion on the side, though (but still about planners, of course;) )...if you're the type who hates notebook planners or if you're super OC that you want a desk planner aside from your notebook planner (both of which you religiously update) then look at what I found in the ever visible National Bookstore! Yup, I found really cute and funkily designed desk planners that are oh-so-affordable! I used to look at desk planners, when I was younger, but the ones with the doggie designs or must-see-places-in-Rome designs have been rather expensive. I'm excited to use this because

1. it offers easier writing (especially when I'm in a hurry)
2. it gives you a better view of your week and month with just one page
3. the boxes are still big enough to write lots of stuff on
4. I get to have a new calendar layout every month!

Excited much? Check back to see if the posts on the planners are up and readable already, ayt? Ayt! ;)

Feed a child through YOU

I won't lie, I'm not a big fan of KC Concepcion but I must say her new line for BAYO catches my fancy:

KC's line for BAYO gives back to Charity with every piece purchased.

The pieces in her collection are called KC, Kristina, Cassandra and Cookie! Hahaha :P Very KC indeed!

I have to admit, I am liking the KC hoodie. It looks really fashionable although I would have loved it without the hoodie. Hehe :) I also think KC did a good job modelling it (as seen in the teaser posted above), it looks very chic!

Kristina: 1595php, Cookie: 1195php, Cassandra: 1345php, KC: elusive design! (will post once we find one!)

YM-like cell phone.

I love how YM shows the flow of conversation when you chat. So when I saw this really attractive-looking phone which has the same feature, I knew that I just had to get my hands on the LG KS360!

I'm a self-confessed kitiki-text (whoa, that's a term I haven't heard and used in a LOOONG time!) but I think I also often have short-term memory loss. That's why I really relish the fact that my new phone shows my replies and my friend's messages in a single window. I think it's perfect for me and it saves me some time. I used to go to my sent items and try my best to remember what my friends texted last because I've already erased their previous message.

Texting with my besti. Yup, you can add an image so it would really look like YM. Every message shows your picture or your textmate's. ;)

I also love how pretty their color combinations are. They have blue/black, gray/black, red/black, green/white, and pink/white. Below are three of the five available colors..

Blue/black, Pink/White, Red/Black
Top: Portrait view; Bottom: Landscape view

A downside to this phone is that there are only 3 useable themes in the phone. It was a bit sad that I couldn't find any theme to download from the internet for this phone, just wallpapers. But hey, the pre-installed themes are cute anyway (all three are animated).

QWERTY keys are for texting, touch screen is for calling when in portrait view. (Of course you can also dial numbers when in landscape view.)

It may look like a toy but isn't that where it gets its charm? :) Stay happy with its cheerful colors as you keep in touch with your friends and loved ones. So, are you gonna get one for yourself anytime soon? :)

*P.S. Sorry for the yellowish pictures. It's the lighting in the room. Tsktsk.

Basic Make-up Necessities

Hey girls! Some of you mentioned that you don't really use make-up but you want to know what products are necessary to jump-start your kits. We came up with a list which contains products that could help you create the natural look and is for everyday use. It is numbered according to the order of applying the products on your face. Hope this helps! ;)

1. Concealer
The most important thing to remember in putting on make-up is that you want to make your face look flawless. This means that your goal is to hide your dark under circles, acne scars, brown spots and redness. Concealing is all a matter of balancing the color of the flaw. So for our dark circles under the eyes (which has a bluish/purplish undertone), the salmon colored concealer works best - because of the pink tones it possesses. Avoid yellow concealers for dark circles because it would give you racoon-ish looking eyes. Some swear by the salmon colored concealer. They say that it also works when you want to conceal pimples and redness. I haven't tried that though (I've only used salmon-colored concealers for my dark under eye circles). What I've tried using are (1)green concealer and (2)professional grade concealer that is similar to or very near my skin tone.

Product Suggestions: Bobbi Brown's Corrector in Bisque, Mac Studio Fix Concealer in NC35/NC42 (depending on your skin tone), Make-up forever's HD Concealer in Beige Apricot, Laura Mercier's Secret Camouflage in SC-03, Revlon Age Defying Spa Concealer, L'oreal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Concealer in Light/Medium Warm, Skin Food Rice Concealer

2. Eye Products
A. Eye Shadow
If you're still studying or already working, then we're assuming that you don't plan to wear loud colored eyeshadows in school or work. Besides, all you need to achieve the natural look are 3 shades (which, again, look natural) - light, medium, dark. So let's say I'm getting pastel pink, gold or copper, and taupe or tawny. I can use one, two or three colors alternately. Try getting eyeshadows in matte or semi-shimmer to avoid looking O.A. during the day. However, if you are going to a party or a night-out, then that's the time for you to use color and shimmer shadows.

Tip: Shape your eyebrows! Make sure they aren't too thin or thick or sparse :) Blend your eyeshadow, we shouldn't be able to tell up to where you applied the color! Watch youtube videos on how to blend.

Product Suggestions: Mac, Max Factor, Make-Up Forever, Coastal Scents, Elianto, PAC

B.Eye Liner
If you want to make your eyes look bigger, then use eye liner. Opt for brown eye liners for a more natural look. Pencils are the easiest to use and the most natural-looking. But, there are gel and liquid eye liners.

Product Suggestions: Lancome Le Crayon Kohl, Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner, Prestige Liquid Liner, Fashion 21, Ever Bilena, VOV Liquid Eyeliner

C. Mascara
Curl those lashes! Then make them look thicker by applying mascara. I can't believe how I've discovered the beauty of mascaras just now. I love how it makes my lashes look thicker and longer.

Product Suggestions: Lancome, Awake, Maybelline
3. Blush
There are a lot of blush options in the market. You can opt for the powder, cream, stain, or gel. I've tried all of these and all has it's pros and cons. So it is a matter of finding the right formula for your skin type (oily skinned should stay away from cream and opt for powder, etc.) . Just remember that your goal is to look like your cheeks are naturally flushed and not like someone b*tch-slapped both your cheeks! Some gels and stains leave more pigment on your fingers than on your cheeks. Powders are a bit inconvenient to apply (most don't have brushes that function well).

Tip: Blend the color to your cheeks so you won't look like you have a red or pink strip across your face! Asians have warm skin so opt for corals, browns, and warm reds.

Product Suggestions: Nars in Orgasm or Super Orgasm, Face Shop's Color Nuance, The Body Shop's Cheek Color, The Body Shop's Lip and Cheek Stain, Smashbox's O glow, Revlon Powder Blush.

4. Lipstick
The right shade of lipsticks for you are said to be the hardest to find. But Bobbi Brown (the well known make-up artist and make-up maker) said that your everyday lipstick should be 2 shades darker than your lip color. While Nude, should be 2 shades lighter. Red will depend on your skin tone. Find your shade of nude, pink and red lipstick to expand your make-up horizon. If you have the correct shades of these 3 for your skin tone, then you're good to go.

Tips: You can also try tinted lip gloss if you're a bit hesitant to use lipsticks. Also, you can try using a lipliner to prevent your lipstick from bleeding.

Product Suggestions: Mac, Bobbi Brown, Shu Uemura, Avon; tinted lipgloss: Nivea, Mac, Elianto

Optional:

1. Primer
If you have oily skin, use a primer! This also helps to make your make-up stay on your face longer. That means you won't have to keep on retouching after every subject (haha)!

Product Suggestions: Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot, Urban Decay Eye Primer, Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, L'Oreal UV Perfect

When to use: Before applying anything else. Right after you tone (no need to moisturize if you're applying make-up - which are oil-based)

2. Foundation
Please please please choose a shade that is closest to your skin tone! Try different shades on your jaw and go to the part of the store where they have natural light (sunlight). Choose the one which 'vanishes' to your skin because it means that's the one nearest your skin tone. This is important because I'm sure you don't want to see your photos and look like you're a person who does pantomime! You can opt for a foundation which has sheer coverage (but don't expect that to fully cover your flaws, ayt?).

Tip: Try the tinted moisturizers. Some suggest that you go for this to save you a step but I haven't tried using one so I can't really comment on this product yet. Hehe.

Product Suggestions: Mac, Revlon Color Stay, Mary Kay, Max Factor, Clinique

When to use: After concealing

3. Powder
If your concealer is sheer and you only concealed a small portion of your face then you can skip this. But if you used foundation and/or if you concealed a big part of your face, setting it with powder will be a must!

Tip: Prioritize application on the T-zone. Whatever amount of powder that's left on your brush, apply it on your cheeks and neck.

When to use: After putting foundation.

4. Brushes!
You could either make do with whatever brush comes with the product you purchased but if there aren't any then you can get brush sets or individual pieces.

Tips: Clean your brushes with a brush cleaner after you use it and try to wash it with regular liquid soap (not dishwashing soap or fancy shampoo!) under running water once a week to prolong its life.

Product Suggestions: splurge with--> Mac, Smashbox; save with--> E.L.F., Suesh

To help you girls, we've listed products which are both expensive for those who are willing to splurge and are affordable for those who are under a tight budget. If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

P.S. Some of the products in the product suggestions haven't been tried by the PK girls. Those were only researched and are loved by lots of people. So please be careful and if you can try the product before purchasing, we urge you to do so :)

So there, happy cosmetics shopping!

Make your make-up kit a treasure chest.

Recently, I've been very interested about make-up. I've been researching online, asking experts about which beauty products they'd recommend, and trying products out.  Of course we all want to invest on products that are fit for us (skin type, skin tone, weather, and occasion). We want to look good wearing it...we want it to enhance our features. That is why the list we came up with contains products that most people approve of. The products suit almost all, if not all, Filipina women (or warm skin-toned women for that matter). So, are you ready for the list that would make putting on the 'no-make-up' make-up on yourself a breeze? Read on, loves!

1. Maybelline Clear Smooth Shine Free Face (Pressed) Powder (around P200)
I've seen lots of people retouching with this, and I found out that this product was particularly made for Asians. The shades I've seen so far are Fair, Natural and Honey. What's great about this product is that it is fragrance-free, oil-free, and non-comedogenic which means it won't clog our pores! But girls with sensitive skin such as I, please do be careful. After several uses, this made my face itch a bit.

2.Mac Spice Lipliner (around P650-800)
Most people love to use lipstick without knowing the importance of a lip liner. Lip liners prevent the lipstick from bleeding. It could also be used in the place of lipsticks. If you want a color which matches almost all shades of lipstick, then opt for Mac's Spice.

3.  Smashbox Brushes
I know that it's more affordable to buy brush kits but I just love these individual professional brushes. The Smashbox brushes are made of really soft sable hair (which is a higher quality than goat hair). The red handles also make it much more eye-catching. However, Smashbox does not have the brush I'm currently raving/loving...the stippling brush. No worries though, their powder brush and eyeshadow brushes are must-buys! Hehe. The powder brush sells for P2250, while the bullet (eyeshadow crease) brush goes for P1750.

4. Nars Orgasm Blush (P1350)
Since I was in High School, I've loved blush products the most. Blush ons (cheek stains to be more exact) made me feel that I look 'complete'. So, it was natural for me to choose to splurge on a blush (but in powder form now) before anything else. The Orgasm Nars blush is also recommended by most make-up artists because it suits most Asian women. Not only that, it also just looks natural (as if you've just seen your crush!). It's funny that they gave that name for their most popular color. Most people comment that it must be THAT good to be named as such!

5. Shu Uemura Curlash (P1000)
I've never heard of anyone who dislikes this particular eyelash curler. Make-up artists swear by it. We actually compared various eyelash curler brands and found the wonderful difference of Shu Uemura's. Its design and curve assures that it will get the most eyelashes (even those that are hard to reach) curled perfectly...that is if you know how to use a curlash

6. Primer
We all know about foundations as our make-up base but most of us have never heard of eye/face primers. Primers are applied before foundations. It acts as a barrier for your skin. It prevents your skin from absorbing the make-up thus stopping it and not letting it clog your pores. It also prevents making your skin produce more oil, so this is THE product for oily/combination skinned girls.

Also, I've been sorta anti make-up before because every time I use make-up (even if it's applied in well-known salons), I get oily afterwards and sometimes I get pimple breakouts! But when I learned about primers and started using one (I'm using Napoleon primer which costs around P1800), my skin doesn't easily get irritated anymore! I've proven this because the one time that I forgot to put primer first, after a few minutes my face was already itching (and yeah, that's when I remembered that I forgot to put primer on)!

There you go! To end this post, we leave you with a few more tips, girls! (a)It is doubly important to take very good care of your skin..don't forget to CLEANSE, TONE and MOISTURIZE (but analyze your skin type first. 'kay?)! This is important because good skin makes make-up application so much more easier and faster. (b)Don't be shy to test the products first before purchasing! This is also necessary so that you'll know if you are allergic to the product or if it makes you oily. (c)Don't forget to take good care of your brushes and your make-up so that it'd live a longer life. If you're unsure how to properly clean them, search for it or message us, we'll be glad to help :)

Tah-tah! Happy make-up hunting!

What THE?!

Yes THE!! Last September 5, Project Runway Philippines' Mara Reyes along with three guys opened their clothing store in Cubao X. The boutique is named... THE Clothing. They sell t-shirts, skateboards, leggings, pants, and shoes that they've designed.

If you wanna see their products in person, go to their store located at Unit 4A, Cubao Expo. For a little sneak peek, keep scrolling down.. :)

THE Clothing store :)
I loved the funky logo.

THE logo t-shirt print
Sorry for the crappy quality of the picture. The color of the shirt is supposed to look like the L.A. Lakers' colors. Violet and yellow.

\m/ Mara Reyes' design
Please don't think I'm biased... I really like how disturbing the image is. Haha. I'm wondering though if Ate Mara is channeling Hepe here and if the things coming out of the body are maggots.. (because some of their designs are inspired by Graver -another graffiti icon/style).

Pretty Fierce.
Looks like Barbie..in Toy Story 2.

Conventional Graffiti shirt
Looks sooo good in real life and in pictures ;)

If you're super excited and can't wait to contact them then feel free to visit their facebook by clicking HERE.

Have you tried this?: Hapee Night Mint

When it comes to toothpaste, I always go for my tried and tested brand. But when I loitered around the grocery, I saw this shiny dark blue box.
As the pictures show, I did buy one. Hihi. I'm actually quite loyal to another toothpaste brand but my sisters opt for Hapee because they're nationalistic and charitable. Haha. Yup, you read that right. They love supporting Hapee because besides it being a Filipino brand, Hapee donates a portion of its proceeds to a charity which helps buy toothbrushes for needy Filipino kids.
The night mint toothpaste promises to help make you feel relaxed and ready to sleep. So was it really relaxing? I believe so. It could either be psychological or it could probably be due to the chamomile. But hey, for me it worked. Hehe. I was surprised with the lack of sting in the toothpaste (because I'm used to really minty toothpaste) but eventually I got used to its subtle "minty-ness". It's funny how I have two toothpastes open on my sink but now even if it isn't night, I tend to use the Hapee Night Mint. I guess now I've come to terms with realizing that just because I don't get a sharp tingling feeling with the toothpaste, it doesn't mean that it doesn't clean my teeth.

Well, what do you think? Isn't it cool that a purely Filipino brand came up with an interesting concept. Night Toothpaste, cool (and I don't mind the pun)! ;)

Spend Spend Spend

My sister was telling my mom a few days ago that President GMA said in a speech that we should all "SPEND SPEND SPEND" (while imitating GMA's infamous look when she talks..hehe.) So I went shopping. Online window shopping, that is. Here are some beautiful stuff I chanced upon.. *Sigh* If I were an ultra rich girl.. Haha!

And so my fixation with booties continue. If only wearing boots in Pinas wasn't such a hassle..

Since the trend shades right now are of the neutral palette, think khakis and creams, one must let her bag do the talking!

Still on the said 'neutral' trend, you can also add a pop of color through your shoes. Black sandals with ingenious designs such as mesh and animal skin (faux, we hope) will surely add zest to your ensemble.

Okay, time to get back to reality.. :)

Make your own Havs

Hey PK girls! It's almost that time again.. We're talking about the 2009 Make Your Own Havaianas at the Rockwell Tent. This would be held on May 28 up to June 1. So make sure to block those dates. The usual Top and Slim styles would be available. As for embellishments, you'd be able to use the glamorous Swarovski crystals and the hip Lifestyle Pins. What's new this year is the availability of Culture Pins which would showcase Filipino pride. You can choose among the truly Pinoy symbols such as our Flag, Tarsiers, or Vintas.

We hope we gave you a head start so you can let your creative juices flow early on and prepare your designs. Good luck and see you there!

Deli-sioso!

Three things I lalala-love are nuts, cheese and honey ham! So imagine how heavenly it was for me to walk into Santis Delicatessen at Corinthian Hills. Santis Delicatessen sells Euro-Swiss food which includes meat and fish, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, fine foods, confectionery and baked goods.

I was first drawn towards the display chiller for the meat. After getting some honey ham, farmer's ham and turkey ham I checked the next chiller..and the gates of heaven opened! I saw cheeeese! Haha. They had various chunks of cheese that I couldn't wait to try. What was unique here (something we don't normally see in groceries) were goat's cream cheese and mixed cheese for fondue. Also, Santis has packaged nuts such as whole almonds, whole hazelnuts, almond flakes and almond chunks.

I left Santis with a huge grocery bag. Happy, that I have finally found my almond flakes (and my other purchases, as well). If you want to try products with consistently good quality (and boy do I mean good),  go ahead and check out their site by clicking SANTIS! Better yet, go ahead and visit one of their 9 branches (Yakal, Forbes, Wilson, Alabang, Timog, Silang, Rockwell, Ortigas, Corinthian Hills, or Capitol Hills).

The newest ipod

I thought this isn't out in the Philippine market yet, but it is! Maybe they weren't as 'all out' with presenting this as the Nano-chromatic. So, we'd like to take the opportunity to present the newest addition to the ipod family to you..
GIVE A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THE NEWEST GENERATION OF THE  I-POD SHUFFLE!

There are several differences (or improvements, depending on your perception) with the new shuffle and the old one. The most noticeable change is its shape. Next is where the controls are. Now, the controls are located on the right earbud's cord. It still has the clip but it is now made of stainless steel. The best change of all is this, the new shuffle now talks! Yes, you read that right, it talks! Since there's no screen for you to read what song is playing and since the shuffle targets the physically active ones, the new shuffle now has a 'talking option' which tells you what song you're about to listen to. It can also tell you who sang the song, and what playlist it's playing for you.

This new ipod is now the most handy of them all. Even if it still has 4GB memory, it's made  more affordable by Apple. I checked iStudio the other day, and if I remember it correctly, it's around P4,000. So what are you waiting for, go get one! :)

Oh-so Intuitive!

I checked the Smashbox website to see if this is their new line, however I didn't find it. Still, I'd rather put all these products in one post just cause it possesses the same cool quality.

So, what am I talking about? I'm talking about Smashbox's Intuitive products. During the last quarter of last year, I was able to try two intuitive products. These are O-glow and O-gloss. All I can say is that these are really fun and innovative. The "O-" products amazingly change from crystal clear to your shade of pink. It contains Goji Berry C-complex, ginkgo biloba and pomengrate seeds which reacts to your own skin chemistry and changes to the color that best fits your skin tone. I was really so into using it. However, I noticed two things. First is that I'm morena so the pink shades of the gloss don't fit my skin tone well. What I need is a pinkish-orange tone. :) Second thing is that, with the cheek tint, the shade of the glow it brought was perfect but I got rashes from it. (So I guess what I'm saying is that be cautious in trying it out, coz you might get the same reaction).

Anyway, the reason I'm telling you about this is that they have new products now. There's the O-plump and O-bronze. As their names imply, it has the same cool 'customized shade' but this time the O-Plump puts shine and adds volume to your lips. Just like a lip plumper, only better ;) The O-bronze is what I'm excited about. Applying a small amount of it on your cheeks would give you a natural-looking sunkissed glow! It sounds so perfect for the summer ;)

What are you waiting for? Head to the Beauty Bar nearest your place to check these out, I'm telling you, you won't regret it!
